Ron Rivera, the Panthers coach, expressed his sentiments this week about backup Daryl Williams. He said Williams was not working hard enough to push Mike Remmers, the starting right tackle. Following his observations and comments, the Panthers decided to refurbish their squad on Wednesday with a couple of fresh players with the aim of exerting the necessary pressure successfully. As stated by credible sources in the NFL, Will Beatty, the ex-New York Giants tackle and Willie Smith, the former East Carolina offensive lineman, were in practice with the Panthers in Charlotte to push for their NFL picks against the spread as well.
It seems the Panthers have already decided on their starting tackles for now, that is, Mike Remmers and Michael Oher. However, their backups, Daryl Williams and David Foucault had difficulties finding the right rhythm through their training in the camp as well as their exhibition game, which took place last week at Baltimore. The 31-year old Beatty has a good rapport with Dave Gettleman, the Panthers GM, because they worked together with the New York Giants. Beatty also has noteworthy starting experience. Furthermore, the 29-year-old Smith spent most of his childhood years in Smithfield, in which he later played at ECU as an all-conference player. During the last two seasons at ECU, Smith started 27 consecutive games. However, in the 2015 season, both of them did not play in any game.
During the offseason of the same year, Beatty had to be released after resting the entire 2015 season thanks to a torn rotator cuff and a torn pectoral muscle. However, the news is that his surgeon has declared him fit to take part fully this season. In the 2009 draft, Beatty became the second-round pick of New York. At the time, Gettleman was oversaw most activities in the pro personnel department of the Giants. In the last six seasons, Beatty has managed to start for the Giants in 63 games in which he played as a left tackle in all of them except four games. Several teams have showed their interest on Beatty so far.
According to reports, Beatty received his contract from Jacksonville after a recent training session. At the same time, Philadelphia also had their radar on Beatty, while the Eagles are still awaiting the verdict of their appeal against a 10-game suspension handed to Lane Johnson, their right tackle. In 2011, Smith was an undrafted free agent, which led him to Washington and he stayed with San Diego and Oakland as well. He was a starter in seven games for the Raiders in 2012. Even though he made it to Washington’s camp last summer, he did not feature in the roster after playing below par in their preseason game against Detroit.
Last year, Oakland received three draft picks from the Panthers after which, in the fourth round, they selected Williams. He managed to play 10 games and start in two of them as a rookie before spraining his knee in their game against Jacksonville in Week 1. Williams plays best as a right tackle. In their loss to Baltimore in an exhibition match last week, he played as a left tackle in which he gave up a strip-sack. Foucault lacks the knack to pressurize opponents as seen in their game against the Ravens, and he has inconsistencies when it comes to 1-on-1 blocking drills as seen at Wofford.
